Meat End Market Trends in Kenya

About the Study

This study examines the impact of health concerns, affordability, product differentiation and access to knowledge on Kenya’s livestock sector, citing them as key barriers to sector growth.

To address these issues, the study recommended the development of meat products for low-income markets to ensure producers can compete with low-cost fish, training meat traders on grading, cutting and pricing to allow them to come up with differentiated products, and a review of policy and legal frameworks to address safety and quality concerns.

The study also highlighted that there is an important role for research institutions to play, particularly with regard to the exploration of new technologies for the detection of drug residue in source markets.
